Seven years demanded in shooting case

MAASTRICHT - The public prosecutor (OM) in Maastricht has demanded seven years in prison against Brunssummer François C. The 30-year-old man is suspected of shooting two Heerlen residents in August 2009. Both victims were hit by bullets in their upper leg during a hefty brawl. François C. went to the home of the two Heerlen people on August 16 last year together with a still unknown co-accused. The purpose of this visit was to collect five thousand euros for a motorcycle he would have sold to them. The Brunssum resident claimed to the court that he was immediately knocked down in the residence with a so-called meat tenderizer, after which he "purely and solely" shot his two assailants in the legs in self-defense. "I just wanted to visit nicely to talk about that money I was entitled to. In retrospect, this appears to have been an ambush." The two men shot by the Brunssummer earlier stated to police that it was precisely C. who had first attacked them with a firearm and a blackjack. Prosecutor Sylvia Kuipers did not consider attempted murder proven, but did find that C. should be jailed for seven years for attempted manslaughter of the two Heerlen men. Serge Weening, lawyer for François C., asked the Maastricht court to acquit his client. "After all, he deliberately did not shoot at the torso of the victims," he said. Verdict in two weeks.
