Attorney Serge Weening is furious about the life sentence his client Jurandy T. received Tuesday for the murder of Sven Prins.
According to counsel, the justification for the extraordinary sentence was completely lacking in some respects.
Disbelief
Jurandy did not move a muscle when he heard the verdict. "He said from the beginning that he thought they had this in store for him, it didn't surprise him anymore," explained Weening. "But this punishment is inhumane. He has been accused of not showing compassion. Well, do you call this compassion?"
Slaughterhouse
According to Weening, the judges who handled the Prince case have a certain reputation. "That of a slaughterhouse. They have imposed higher sentences than the prosecution has demanded in several cases. We will definitely appeal."
Three punishments
Jurandy was one of three suspects for the murder of Sven Prins, who was liquidated in Brunssum on Sept. 25, 2015. A reckoning after a conflict in the drug circuit got out of hand, the court believes. The other suspects, Sergio K. and Xionel B., both received 30-year prison sentences. All suspects are appealing.
Exceptional
The Limburg District Court has not often handed down life sentences. In recent years, only Frenky P., Olaf H. and Lau G. were sentenced to such a sentence.
