Thijs H. (28) gets a tbs measure and 24 years in prison, if it is up to justice. In May 2019, Thijs stabbed three people to death; one woman in The Hague and a man and a woman on Brunssummerheide.
In its demand, the Justice Department passes over expert opinion declaring Thijs totally insane. The prosecutor considers him diminished responsible.
Outside themselves
Later, the Brunssumer would declare that he was psychotic at the time of the murders, something that was underlined by experts from the Pieter Baan Center. These experts recommended that Thijs be declared completely insane and thus that no sentence be imposed. The twenty-something would have been completely beside himself when he committed the murders.
Not impunity
That the student was struggling with psychosis and that this was part of the reason for the murders is not ruled out by the prosecution. "But only if it can be ruled out that no other motive played a role, impunity can follow," the officer was clear. Justice argues that there can be no such thing in this case and emphasizes that the Pieter Baan Center advises, not decides.
Soul for Satan
Justice has long been skeptical of Thijs' psychosis story. "We had those reservations, and we still have them," the officer said Tuesday. Not only did Thijs search the Internet for ways to fool experts and the judiciary, he also did not use his medication or used it incorrectly, and used cannabis and psychedelic truffles.
The suspect also visited websites about serial killers, psychopaths and dark figures such as Lucifer. "How do you transfer your soul to Satan?" among other things, he searched.
Sometimes gruesome
Whether Thijs committed the murders is no longer in question. He has confessed, but there is also an abundance of dna traces and there are witnesses who saw him around the murders. The prosecution also believes it can be proven that there was premeditation and thus murder. "As he said himself: he found it sometimes gruesome, sometimes too much, but he knew what he was doing all along."
Sudden confession
There is also the necessary distrust within the judiciary about Thijs' statements. Only when he had read the complete file and thus knew what evidence there was against him, did he come up with a confessional statement and the necessary details. Until then, he always indicated that he knew nothing more. Incidentally, the justice system sees contradictions in various statements made by the Brunssumer.
On Wednesday, the trial of Thijs H. will conclude with the plea of his lawyer Serge Weening. The judge will probably make a ruling on July 30.
