CAFÉRUZIE GELEEN Request for counsel.

MAASTRICHT/GELEEN - The 22-year-old Paul S., one of the seven suspects in the manslaughter of Fer Loontjens on Carnival Sunday in the Geleen café 't Vlaegelke, was released yesterday by the court in Maastricht. His counsel Serge Weening had requested this. S. is also suspected of involvement in previous assaults, but the court did not think he should remain detained there, as prosecutor Anneke Rogier had requested.

According to attorney Weening, hardly any incriminating statements were made against his client either. Fer Loontjens was mistreated by a group of pub visitors on Sunday to such an extent that he fell into a coma.

Thirteen days later he died. The violent incident had great impact in Geleen, where more than eight hundred people joined in a silent march in memory of Fer Loontjens.
