LUIK - The 28-year-old Belgian Djeylan P., detained for murdering Nieuwegein's Rianne Brouwer (27) last Friday in Maastricht, tried to take his own life in his cell because he regrets his atrocity.
This is confirmed by his lawyer Serge Weening to The Telegraph.
Prison guards at Liege's Lantin jail caught P. with injuries to his neck. The man has been transferred to the segregation ward and is under psychological treatment. According to Weening, his client realizes that he is responsible for Rianne's death. "With the fact that he has done something so terrible, he cannot deal with it," Weening said.
Djeylan P. appears to have killed the doctoral student with knife wounds to her neck. "According to my client, he was smoking a joint on the gallery of the apartment complex on Oranjeplein, when he was suddenly accosted by Rianne Brouwer. The latter allegedly accused him of stealing from her apartment. Then he stabbed her to death during a struggle," said the Maastricht criminal lawyer.
This confession by P. is not yet known to the investigative services because he has not yet been heard by the criminal investigation department in Belgium. P. will be arraigned tomorrow before the investigating judge. He is expected to be extradited to our country in the near future.
