Nijmegen man convicted of shooting (www.rechtspraak.nl)

A 42-year-old man from Nijmegen has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for manslaughter and attempted murder. Suspect went on a gruesome rampage on the night of June 11-12, 2011. He was agitated, angry and under the influence of alcohol. He first fired a gun in the air outside. He then fired two shots into the home of an elderly woman. One of the bullets hit the woman. She died of her injuries. Later that evening, defendant drove to the residence of his next victim, waited for him there, and, after calm deliberation, shot him deliberately and after calm deliberation in front of his residence.

Most treasured possession taken away

Defendant shockingly snatched from the elderly woman's family and friends their mother, mother-in-law, sister, grandmother and friend. He committed the greatest possible violation of this woman's personal integrity. Namely, he deprived her of her most precious possession, life.

This also nearly happened to the man. That he remained alive may be called a miracle. This man is still suffering from the injuries the defendant inflicted on him.

Review

Defendant, previously convicted of violent crimes, has now pleaded guilty again to two very serious violent crimes. The court charges him with this severely. Such acts create great unrest in society, cause a great sense of insecurity and shock the rule of law to a severe degree. Hence the court considers a long prison sentence appropriate.
