MAASTRICHT/BRUNSSUM - The four suspects in the robbery murder of Arnold Vink 77 from Brunssum were sentenced yesterday by the court in Maastricht to prison terms and payment of 3,500 euros each in damages to the victim's relatives.
Ali B 17, Vink's neighbor boy, was sentenced to two years of juvenile detention and juvenile tbs, maximum six years. He confessed to stabbing the elderly man to death with a knife. Mustapha Z. 22, the only adult of the quartet, faces three years in prison. Mourad S 17 and Soufian Z. 15, who had been on the lookout, were sentenced to juvenile detention of one year, of which four months were suspended, and 15 months, of which five were suspended, respectively. Remarkably, the court criticized the way the youngest suspect was interrogated by detectives. The attitude of the police officers was said to have been rather intimidating. Nevertheless, the court ruled that this did not affect the burden of proof.
Here foursome decided at the suggestion of Ali B. to rob Vink in his home on the De Ruijterstraat in an attempt to rob him of his bank cards and pin code. When the disabled elderly person resisted, B. stabbed him several times in the neck and chest with a knife. Mustapha Z. then searched the house. The loot eventually consisted of eighty euros. The money was divided between them.
