SITTARD/MAASTRICHT - Murder suspect Hub L. from Sittard (58) has been detained in Maastricht since Monday. Spain, the country where L. hid from justice in the Netherlands for six months, extradited him very much against his will.
This was confirmed by L.'s lawyer Ivo van den Bergh, who said he was unpleasantly surprised by the speed with which the justice system in Spain made the decision. Hub L. is held responsible by the justice system for the death of Iraqi citizen Mouhammed Al Jader. Al Jader was murdered in 2011 in the home of L. and his family, after which his body was dissolved in hydrochloric acid, justice believes. Something similar allegedly happened to Al Jader's compatriot Alan Gergeri in 2009, a murder of which son Maurice L. is a suspect. Besides father Hub L. and son Maurice L., two more family members are in custody: mother Els L. and son Michel L. Only daughter Rachelle L. is still a fugitive, she disappeared in a hurry along with father Hub L.when the first family member was arrested. Hub L. was arrested in Spain in June this year and has been in a prison near Madrid under poor conditions ever since. Yet he resisted the extradition requested by the Netherlands because, under the Spanish legal system, an offender cannot be sentenced in advance to life in prison, a punishment L. fears in the Netherlands. Just two weeks ago, L.'s lawyers announced a "months-long" legal resistance. Van den Bergh: "There was a hearing, and it went in a way we absolutely did not expect."
