Fear and trepidation in t Huukske

In 't Huukske _the beer flowed richly. As did the blood. A quarrel years ago led to several murders. Now, for the first time, one of the protagonists, Daan Castelijns, who was convicted in a bizarre way, is talking. For the first time, too, it appears that the criminal investigation department played a miraculous role. "It was indigestible that I had to sit for something I hadn't done," he says.

It all begins in January 1999. In the neighborhood cafe 't Huukske in Den Bosch, it is pleasant that evening as usual. But something is brewing. The attractive Manuela, girlfriend of the well-known Bossche criminal Hans 'Puk' Verspeek, has gone out on her own after yet another relational quarrel. And Puk, who almost always carries a gun with him and shot his father to death as a 16-year-old in 1986, has announced that he won't put up with that and will shoot her "to pieces. Just before two, the small, petite Puk Verspeek enters the cafe. He is extremely agitated and has a gun under his coat. At that moment there are about thirteen people inside, including regulars like Verspeek's sister, but also gentlemen who are not exactly known as sweethearts in Den Bosch, such as Franco C., Leon 'd'n Bobbert' M. and Daan Castelijns. Everyone is startled when Puk walks up to Manuela, but Franco jumps in immediately. Then the he! Jos. A scuffle ensues in which Verspeek shoots Franco C. in the leg. D'n Bobbert manages to wrest the gun from Verspeek, fires three shots and hits him fatally. Within seconds, one dead and one wounded person lie on the ground in the small cafe. The panic is enormous.
