HEERLEN - The suspicious package delivered to Heerlen City Hall on December 21 contained the explosive TNT. The letter bomb, which lacked a detonator, was addressed to Mayor Ralf Krewinkel demanding 1 million euros.
Lawyer Sjanneke de Crom, who is representing a suspect in the case, confirmed Wednesday reports of this on the website crimewatcher.nl
On Dec. 22, police arrested a 45-year-old Heerlen man in connection with this, who was released after five days. He remains a suspect, however. In that capacity, the man had access to the file. He made that public on Wednesday via the website, De Crom said.
The police file allegedly showed that the mayor was to first transfer 1,000 bitcoins to an account, and then be given 72 hours to drop 1 million euros at a location to be agreed upon. Should the mayor refuse to do so, an explosive would go off at an unspecified day and time, according to the letter in the package.
The Maastricht Public Prosecutor's Office did not want to make any announcements on the matter. "The investigation is ongoing," the prosecutor's spokeswoman said Wednesday evening
