SITTARD/MAASTRICHT - A couple from Sittard is suspected of human smuggling from Iraq to the Netherlands and Belgium. This is confirmed by a reliable source around the investigation. The husband is currently in custody. His wife has been heard as a suspect, but is at large due to her pregnancy. According to investigations by the Royal Military Police and the Public Prosecutor's Office, the smuggling of dozens of Iraqis over the past two years is allegedly involved. The Sittarden man is attributed a leading role in this. The chambers of the court in Maastricht yesterday extended the suspect's pre-trial detention by thirty days. His lawyer Serge Weening did not want to comment on the suspicion against his client yesterday.
