In the case of a bizarre accident at campsite De Rietschoof in Aalst (municipality of Zaltbommel), the suspect, a 25-year-old man from Bosschen, is heading for acquittal. The man was previously sentenced to four years in prison by the court, but on appeal, attorney general C. Revis himself asked for an acquittal yesterday.
That demand had become unavoidable, according to the representative of the public prosecutor's office, due to a new report on the cause of death of the victim, Gerrit Snoeren (29), of Rotterdam. According to forensic physician S. Eijkelenboom, Snoeren did not die in the Bosschenaar's car. The court still assumed that.
The corpse of Snoeren was found on April 21, 2003, in the trunk of the Bosschenaar's car. The latter himself was severely injured behind the wheel, having driven into a tree at high speed at the campsite. A comrade of the Bosschenaar who was sitting next to him remained uninjured. Soon after the accident, rumors arose that Snoeren had died not in the accident but earlier. In May '03 this even led to the exhumation and autopsy of the body.
A pathologist anatomist subsequently concluded that Snoeren had died in the accident. According to his family, however, it is inconceivable that the Rotterdam man got into the car with the Bosch man and his friend. He knew the men superficially and, on the contrary, would have disliked them.
Yesterday, a police accident analyst stated that he had always had doubts about the accident as the cause of death. According to him, the condition in which he found the victim in the car pointed to a different circumstance.
The medical examiner also stated that the victim's injuries did not fit the accident. Snoeren's head was so badly injured that, according to the medical examiner, it looked like a car had just run over it. The Bosch man and his friend say they have no recollection of it in particular.
Attorney General Revis did demand another year in prison for burglaries and receiving stolen goods against the Bosch man.
