An officer from Singapore is suspected of multiple rapes in Maastricht. This Raf S. (29) was staying in the provincial capital for his master's studies at the university.
He allegedly raped at least two girls and assaulted one in the spring and summer of 2018. According to prosecutors, Raf drugged the victims first.
Escape hazard
Whether he would have done so during nights out or student parties is as yet unknown. Both his lawyer and the Justice Department are not commenting on that. Nor is the justice department revealing how he allegedly drugged the girls. On Wednesday, Raf appeared briefly in court to ask that he be allowed to go to Singapore temporarily. His mother, who lives in Singapore, is ill, he said. The judge denied that request because of the seriousness of the suspicions and possible risk of flight.
Agent and model
In Singapore, the twenty-something worked up quite a resume. For example, he received six months of military training in 2010, after which he became a cadet in the Singapore Police Force. After forays as a model and bank teller, he returned to the Singapore Police Force in 2015. In 2017, he moved to Maastricht for his master's degree. He also graduated there. Raf said he received a 9.5 for his master's thesis on Afghan refugees.
Witnesses will be heard in his case later this month. The judge hopes to conclude the case before the end of this calendar year.
