Attorneys for the defendants in the Sven Prins case have challenged the court.
They want the judges in the criminal case to be replaced. They are doing so because a request to investigate a tip from Belgium has been rejected.
New research
Lawyer Luc Bien of suspect Sergio K. wanted further investigation into the tip from a Belgian woman. The woman called justice and pointed out three perpetrators. The lawyers want more investigation into this tip.
Vooringenomheid
According to the judge, the woman only provided names of possible suspects, but gave no other information. Therefore, the judges do not see a new investigation. "By rejecting it you show bias because, according to you, the file is complete," the lawyer responded Monday afternoon at the court in Maastricht. He and the other lawyers, Bart Nijsten and Serge Weening, want the judges replaced now.
Liquidated
Sven Prins was shot at during a chase in Brunssum two years ago. After he got out of his car, he was liquidated.
Monday began the substantive hearing of the trial of three suspects. Four days were set aside for the case, spread over two weeks.
Stalled
Because of the challenge, the trial is on hold for the time being. The challenge chamber will be notified. It must make a decision on whether to replace the judges. It is unclear when the case will now proceed. Possibly later Monday afternoon or Tuesday.
