Maastricht man suspected of prohibited possession of firearms (Crimewatcher.co.uk)

MAASTRICHT The 42-year-old Maastricht resident who was taken by an arrest team from a house on Dr. Schaepmanstraat on June 1 because he wanted to take his own life is suspected of prohibited possession of firearms. This was confirmed to Crimewatcher by a spokesman for the justice department in Limburg.

"This suspect has now been arraigned before the examining magistrate. His pre-trial detention has been suspended," said Harry Willems of the prosecutor's office. "That means he has been released. If he does not comply with certain conditions, he will still be arrested."

Police had been alerted to the situation on Thursday, June 1, and the area was immediately cordoned off. Many officers were called to secure the area. The 42-year-old Limburger wanted to take his own life with a firearm. By means of a so-called negotiator, the man was brought to his senses and then the called-up arrest team was able to overpower him.

Sjanneke de Crom, lawyer for the Maastricht man, called the decision of the examining magistrate in this case "correct. "This man is going to get help. He didn't mean to do anything to anyone but himself."
