Drug grandmother (82) doesn't have to go to jail (Bjorn Thimister (court) reporter)
An 82-year-old Maastricht resident who had a large cannabis plantation at home for years does not have to go to jail, according to the Court of Appeal in Den Bosch. This ruling runs counter to that of the Maastricht court, which had earlier decided that the very elderly woman should spend six months behind bars.
Her son faces up to 20 months in prison, eight of which are on probation.
The court now sentenced the Limburg drug maid to six months' probation because of her advanced age and frail health. This was also the view of her lawyer Serge Weening.
Moreover, her role was much less than that of her son, who was the initiator of the very large-scale hemp cultivation. Mother and son ran a sizeable hemp plantation in their Maastricht home from 2003 to 2010. With the many hemp harvests, the pair certainly turned over one million euros.
