MAASTRICHT - The 25-year-old C. C. from Hoensbroek was sentenced yesterday by the Maastricht court to three years' imprisonment plus tbs with compulsory treatment for the attempted murder of a 'love rival'. A neighbor across the street from C., who was there when she cut the face, neck and arms of a local woman with a knife on Sunday afternoon, September 28, 2008, received a one-year prison sentence. The victim was "wanted" that afternoon because she had become involved in a relationship with C.'s ex-husband. Although C. had two knives with her on that occasion on Sept. 28, she swore to the court that she mainly wanted to talk. But when it became clear to her that the other woman was now really in a serious relationship with her ex, she became black before her eyes and grabbed a knife.Due to the exceptional seriousness of the offence, prosecutor Martin Scharenborg had demanded 12 years and tbs with compulsory treatment two weeks ago. "Much worse than in this case an attempted murder cannot get," he said. He blamed C. for cutting into the woman and leaving her bleeding in the street, while the victim's 3-year-old son was there and has suffered psychological problems as a result. Behavioral experts consider the risk of C.'s recurrence very high and treatment necessary. The prosecution is satisfied that the court imposed tbs with compulsory treatment. The prosecution is still considering an appeal, says spokeswoman Cindy Rijnders.
