Tourists arrested after aggravated assault during Amstel Gold Race

...Limburg police arrested in connection with aggravated assault on two fellow road users.The victims are a 42-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman from Beek. Both had to be treated for their injuries. The woman was hospitalized and could not leave the hospital until yesterday.

The duo from Beek were riding through the Limburg hamlet of Hegge, near Schinnen, on Saturday around noon. They came up behind a group of cyclists. The motorist wanted to pass the group and exhorted the cyclists to move aside by honking.

Two cyclists, a 48- and 43-year-old Beverwijk resident, were annoyed by the motorist's behavior and forced him to stop. Once on the side of the road, the cyclists attacked the car's occupants. The man and woman were kicked and punched and their car was damaged.

After the mobbing, the Beverwijk duo got on their bikes and rode to Valkenburg. There they were apprehended by police a short time later. A police spokesman speaks of a "very serious situation.

The Amstel Gold Race organizers would not comment on the incident. However, the Amstel Gold Race did bar the detainees from participating in the tour for life.
